Our cord standard

Know what a real cord looks like

Most people have never seen a full cord. It's a lot of wood. Every company that sells through wood for fire agrees to this standard, and every delivery is photographed so you can check it.

Sizes, stacked tight

Full cord
128 cubic feet
4 ft high × 4 ft deep × 8 ft long
about 2,000–2,500 lb
Half cord
64 cubic feet
4 ft high × 4 ft deep × 4 ft long
about 1,000–1,250 lb
Quarter cord
32 cubic feet
4 ft high × 4 ft deep × 2 ft long
about 500–625 lb

If your stack measures smaller than this, you didn't get the full amount.

Stacked, not thrown

Wood dumped loose in a pile takes up more space than the same wood stacked. We always quote the stacked amount. A loose pile that looks like a cord is usually much less once it's stacked.

Standard piece length is 16 inches unless the listing says otherwise.

Seasoned and kiln-dried

Seasoned means air-dried to under 20% moisture. Kiln-dried means heat-treated in a kiln to under 20% moisture. Wood that hisses, steams, or feels heavy and cold usually isn't dry. A $20 moisture meter pushed into a freshly split face gives a true reading.

How to check your delivery

  1. Stack it tight (or have it stacked).
  2. Measure height × depth × length in feet and multiply. A full cord is 128.
  3. Compare with the photos in your delivery email.

If it comes up short

Use the "Report a problem" link in your delivery email within 24 hours. When you pay through wood for fire, the company isn't paid until that window closes, and we hold the money until a reported problem is settled — with a refund, a partial refund, or more wood.

Never pay a deposit, or extra charges at the door, outside woodforfire.com.
