Firewood You Should Never Burn (and Why)

Painted wood, driftwood, moldy logs, poison ivy vines — here's exactly which firewood to avoid burning and the health and chimney risks of each.

Why Some Wood Isn't Just "Lower Quality" — It's Dangerous

Most firewood mistakes are about efficiency: wet wood burns cold, softwood burns fast. But a few types of wood aren't just inefficient — they're genuinely unsafe to burn indoors or around people. Here's the full list, and the specific reason for each.

Treated, Painted, or Stained Lumber

Pressure-treated lumber is chemically treated with copper-based preservatives to resist rot and insects. Burning it releases those compounds into the air and ash, including arsenic in older stock treated before 2004. Painted or stained wood releases lead (in older paint) and volatile organic compounds when burned. Never burn deck boards, fence posts, or construction scraps of unknown origin.

Plywood, Particleboard, and OSB

These materials are held together with formaldehyde-based glues and resins. Burning them releases formaldehyde and other irritating compounds at concentrations far higher than burning solid wood. This includes shipping pallets in many cases — some pallets are chemically fumigated (look for an "MB" stamp, meaning methyl bromide) rather than heat-treated ("HT," which is safer to burn).

Driftwood

Driftwood that's spent time in salt water absorbs chlorides. When burned, those chlorides can form dioxins and other toxic compounds. Driftwood also tends to burn with a colorful flame from absorbed minerals, which looks appealing but signals the same chemical content that makes it unsafe for a home fireplace or stove.

Moldy or Fungus-Covered Wood

Wood that's sat wet too long often grows visible mold or fungus, sometimes with white, black, or greenish patches under the bark. Burning it sends mold spores into the air, which can trigger respiratory reactions, especially for anyone with asthma or allergies. If firewood smells sour or musty rather than earthy, set it aside.

Green (Unseasoned) Wood

Green wood can run 45 to 60 percent moisture content by weight, compared to 20 percent or less for properly seasoned wood. Burning it doesn't just waste heat boiling off water — it burns at a lower temperature, which leads to incomplete combustion and heavier creosote deposits in a chimney or stovepipe. Creosote buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires.

Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Poison Sumac

These plants contain urushiol, the oil that causes contact rashes. Burning any part of the plant — vines, stems, or wood the vines have grown into — releases urushiol into the smoke. Inhaling it can cause severe reactions in the lungs and airway, not just the skin. Always check logs for vine bark before they go in a pile, especially wood cut from fence lines or wooded edges.

Wood From Invasive-Pest Quarantine Zones

Ash killed by emerald ash borer, or any wood moved out of a designated quarantine area, can carry live insects or eggs under the bark. This isn't a burning-safety issue for you directly, but transporting or burning that wood outside its zone can spread the infestation to new areas. Buy wood harvested near where you'll burn it.

Trash, Cardboard, and Glossy Paper

Cardboard, wrapping paper, and magazines burn with inks and coatings that release toxic fumes, and they create large embers that can float out of a fire pit or up a chimney. Use plain, untreated paper or natural kindling to start a fire instead.

The Simple Rule

If you didn't cut it yourself from a known, healthy tree, or buy it from a supplier who can tell you the species and how it was seasoned, ask before you burn it. A few seconds of checking is a lot cheaper than a chimney fire or a bad reaction to smoke.
